As the name implies, a backsplash is a covering that is installed on the wall behind a sink or stove that protects the area from splashes from water, cooking oils and other cooking items and cleaning products. Backsplashes can be limited to just one area or can encompass large areas of the kitchen. They can play a major role in creating a stylish and unique kitchen environment.

Backsplashes can either blend into the décor or they can be a focal point that complements or contrasts with the countertops.

The right backsplash can not only look stunning but can also keep the kitchen looking clean. And like countertops, a good backsplash should be easy to maintain.

How Designs Have Changed

Like other design elements the kitchen backsplash has undergone a style evolution over time. In the 1930s when indoor plumbing became popular backsplashes were installed to protect walls from sink water. In those days backsplashes were only about 4 inches high and were most often attached to farmhouse sinks. They were generally made of inexpensive glass or ceramic tiles.1

With the introduction of undermount sinks in the 1940s, backsplashes had to be mounted to the wall behind the sink. In the 1950s and 1960s, style became an important characteristic of the backsplash with many backsplashes of that era consisting of cement tiles in bright colors and bold, patterned designs.2

From Colorful Patterns to Classic and Clean

In the 1970s and 1980s colorful mosaic patterns were common and the colors reflected the popular colors of the era. The 1990s saw ceramic tile backsplashes with busy and colorful 4-inch ceramic tiles that often included a row of tiles with hand-painted roosters, sunflowers, grape clusters or Tuscan urns on them.3

The last ten years have seen an uptick in the use of white subway tiles, stone mosaics and custom designs for backsplashes – again, playing off the countertops.

Full-Slabs Make a Statement

Currently trending is the move to use the same material for the countertop and backsplash to create a cohesive look. Quoted in Good Housekeeping, designer Justine Wolman said, “The continuity of materials feels elevated, seamless, and both modern and timeless,” in reference to sleek supersized slabs that continue from the countertop to the backsplash and up the wall to the ceiling.4

Using the same material on the countertop and backsplash can also showcase the movement, veining, and natural character of stone on a much larger scale.

Blend In or Stand Out

When choosing a backsplash material it is important to also consider your countertop and floor. Do you want the backsplash to stand out or do you want it to remain in the background of your kitchen design? According to This Old House, “complementary variations on the prevailing color of the kitchen can create a sleek and harmonious effect, while contrasting materials and colors can add intrigue and excitement.”5

A backsplash that wraps large areas of a kitchen projects continuity while selectively placing backsplash material in parts of the kitchen can focus on those areas.

Professional Installation Matters

If you choose to cover large areas with the same material as your countertop it is best to hire a professional countertop installer. The heaviness of the material and the precision, tools and expertise needed to successfully install these large slab backsplashes is not a do-it-yourself project.
