Most people think that countertop materials are only used in kitchens and bathrooms, but there are a variety of other places in a home where the right countertop material can make a huge impact in style and functionality.

Bedrooms, basements, offices and outdoors spaces are just a few areas where the use of granite, quartz or marble can transform a living space.

Granite Beyond the Kitchen

Have you heard of the morning bar? It is a concept that is gaining in popularity, especially in luxury homes. A morning bar is located in the primary bedroom and is a dedicated place to prepare coffee and other hot beverages and snacks. The perfect spot for a gorgeous natural stone countertop.

Bedroom Bar

The morning bar typically includes space for a small refrigerator or refrigerator drawer, a toaster, a microwave, a blender and other small appliances, depending on the homeowners’ preferences.1 It’s billed as “a cozy, functional space where you can have a quiet moment before starting your day.”2

Because the morning bar is a “light duty” food preparation area it isn’t subject to some of the countertop material considerations that kitchens or baths may have. Marble, quartz, quartzite and granite are all acceptable choices for morning bars.

Basement Bar

The same can be said for bars in a basement area. A basement full bar or mini-bar area is a convenient way to entertain guests or enjoy family nights. Installing the right countertop material in these areas helps keep the area easy to clean as well as stylish. Granite is always a go-to as a standout out in unexpected spaces.

Home Office

Home offices are an area where installing a countertop can really improve functionality and enhance productivity. Daily wear and tear can take its toll on surfaces in a home office. Quartz and granite can stand up to repeated use, with quartz offering the longest lifespan at 20 to 25 years, granite at 15 to 20 years,….3

Installed at the right height and depth, a stone countertop will reduce strain on the eyes and the body when using computer equipment. Granite and quartz also make office maintenance easy. Cord clutter can also be reduced through the installation of built-in power outlets in the countertop.

Granite Overall

The morning bar, basement mini-bar and home office countertop areas are generally much smaller than a kitchen countertop area, so they allow homeowners to purchase more expensive, and more beautiful, countertop materials.

Installing exotic granite can really take these niche spaces to a new level, making them a focal point in a room. The dramatic colors and bold movement of an exotic granite such as Blue Bahia, with its deep blue color and lighter blue orbicular patterns or Van Gogh with its swirling blues, greens and golds that resemble artwork, can create a unique space in any home.4

There is also Titanium which is primarily black and silver with metallic-looking minerals or Azul Macaubas which is blue-gray with dramatic white quartz veining, among a host of other stand-out exotic granite options.5

Outdoor Countertop Considerations

Countertop materials aren’t limited to inside a home. In recent years, homeowners have been creating outdoor living areas at a record pace. According to Houzz, homeowners’ motivation for renovating their outdoor living spaces include improving aesthetics (51%), enhancing entertainment space (37%) and extending the living space of their homes (33%).6

Outdoor countertop materials need to be chosen carefully, as they are subject to harsh elements such as water, heat, sun, wind and other environmental conditions. Heat resistance can also be important if the countertop is being installed adjacent to a grill, fire feature or pizza oven.

Granite and quartzite are two good options for outdoor kitchens. Granite is easy to maintain and withstands extreme heat and sun as well as resisting stains, mold, and mildew with the proper sealant.7 Quartzite, is a natural material, unlike quartzite, which is a man-made material. Quartzite countertops won’t fade and are easy to maintain, although quartzite does need to be sealed annually. It is also more vulnerable than granite to damage from high temperatures.

Countertop Recap

Not all countertop materials are suitable for every area of the home. A countertop contractor can provide expert advice on which materials to use in each area of the home for maximum functionality and stunning visual appeal.
